MARK TWAIN MUSEUM

Located in the

 Territorial Enterprise Newspaper Building

The Mark Twain Museum in Virginia City is located in the Territorial Enterprise Newspaper Building, one of the oldest buildings in the city. The museum contains artifacts, newspaper clippings and equipment used in the publishing and printing of the "Territorial Enterprise" newspaper beginning in 1858.  You are able to venture into the upper part of the building which contains many different things to see and purchase as well as a basement which is very interesting in itself.  Mark Twain spent much of his time down here as the editor of the paper.  Below we have placed an excerpt from the Territorial Enterprise newspaper.  It's a story that Mark Twain wrote about ghosts.

Some of the more interesting artifacts is a toilet that was placed in a corner of the room.  Although it is hard to see from this picture, there is a cone-shaped object below the seat where things could be "flushed" and delivered without the use of running water.  This was probably one of the first in-house toilets.

Ghost Trackers member Scott checks his camera for any anomalies he may have caught.  We were pleased to have him join us on this trip.  His experience is second to none and is able to get some astonishing pictures sometimes.

Ghost Trackers member Steve also checks his camera for anomalies.  Steve brings with him the type of photographic experience that assists us in making determinations of orb photos and other anomalies..

Also in the basement is a rather large picture of Mark Twain.  The eyes on this picture are stern and make you feel as though you are being watched.  It is an awkwardly interesting yet beautiful picture.

The actual desk that Mark Twain used while editor of the Territorial Enterprise is on display in the basement.  It is a beautiful piece of woodwork.  It is beautifully maintained by the owner and again makes you feel very unnerved when standing near it.  It looks as though it is currently being used with Mark Twain's newspaper articles and clippings situated within easy reading reach.

MORE GHOSTS by Mark Twain - date unknown

Are we to be scared to death every time we venture into the street? May we be allowed to go quietly about our business, or are we to be assailed at every corner by fearful apparitions. As we were plodding home at the ghostly hour last night, thinking about the haunted house humbug, we were suddenly riveted to the pavement in a paroxysm of terror by that blue and yellow phantom who watches over the destinies of the shooting gallery, this side of the International. Seen in daylight, placidly reclining against his board in the doorway, with his blue coat, and his yellow pants, and his high boots, and his fancy hat, just lifted from his head, he is rather an engaging youth, than otherwise; but at dead of night, when he pops out his pallid face at you by candle light, and stares vacantly upon you with his uplifted hat and the eternal civility of his changeless brow, and the ghostliness of his general appearance heightened by that grave-stone inscription over his stomach, "to-day shooting for chickens here," you are apt to think of spectres starting up from behind tomb-stones, and you weaken accordingly--the cold chills creep over you--our hair stands on end--you reverse your front, and with all possible alacrity, you change your base.

It seems even Mark Twain also thought about ghosts.  Our investigation of the Mark Twain Museum was not without it's happenings.  We did discover anomalies on film and pictures.  We need to verify those before posting them here.  We were getting some very unusual feelings by some of the members and perhaps that's how the pictures will be substantiated.  All in all, the Mark Twain Museum is a great place to visit.  You will see relics from the past and take a step into the past by wandering down into the basement.  Mark Twain kept a bit of humor in his life and you do feel that wonderful energy down in the basement.  There may be something down in that basement...whether it's old Mark or someone else, we were not able to determine on this trip.
