SILVER TERRACE CEMETERY

The Silver Terrace Cemetery is a series of terraces that are located on the steep hillside of Virginia City. As this booming mining camp became a more permanent settlement, there became a need to establish a cemetery.

Beginning in the 1860s, a wide variety of fraternal, civic and religious groups established burial yards on the hillside which include the Masons, Pacific Coast Pioneers, Firemen, Roman Catholic, and various others.

Nearly every plot is fenced or bordered, a typical practice of the Victorian period. The characteristic features of this burial place reflect the breadth of styles and designs popular during its long history.

Unfortunately with age and desecration over the years, the cemetery has become desolate, uncared for and is on the verge of having many of its headstones disintegrate due to being on a hot, windswept hilly area.

So....in the dark, or,

During the day, Silver Terrace Cemetery is a very fascinating place.

Isolated, desolate, more than a stone's throw from town.  It's no wonder the ghosts come out to play at night.  They are usually not disturbed.

There is a story of a glowing headstone.  The story goes that you can see a glowing headstone when you are a distance away and as you approach the "glow" goes away and you unable to determine which is the glowing headstone.  None of the nights that we were in the cemetery filming our documentary were we able to see a glowing headstone.  As well, none of the night's that we were filming in town did we see a glowing headstone coming from the cemetery.  Fact or fiction??  We sure weren't able to clear up this mystery!!

Silver Terrace Cemetery during the day leads you down a long and dusty trail.  It is just as spooky and ominous during the day as it is during the night.  It is a fascinating trek into another time and leaves you admiring these pioneer people for all the strength and courage it must have taken to endure all the hardships they did.
